The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain is one of the Arab Emirates. The name Umm al Quwain literally means “Mother of two powers” in Arabic. The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain is located in the north of the country and is ruled by Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mualla. The ruler, Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mualla has been a member of the United Arab Emirates Supreme Council since 1981. The founder of the ruling family Al Mualla, Sheikh Majid Al Mualla established the sheikhdom still prevalent in The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain in 1775. This independent sheikhdom springs from the lineage of the Al `Ali clan. The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain is home to a rich and varied history. Sheikh Abdullah I signed the General Maritime Treaty in 1820 with the United Kingdom, accepting The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain as a British protectorate to combat the aggressiveness of the Ottoman Turks. The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain shared salute state status with four of its neighbours, Dubai, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Ajman due to its position en route to India, Britains then most resourceful colony. It was in 1971 that Sheikh Ahmad II joined the United Arab Emirates and opened the doors of development and investment in The United Arab Emirate of Umm al Quwain to the rest of the world.
